Two sets of twins, mistaken identities, a notable abundance of pubs and lots and lots of comedic confusion. Join us for Shakespeare's most farcical (and shortest) play set in the melting pot city of Ephesus.
It follows the travails of Antipholus of Syracuse and Antipholus of Ephesus and their identical servants as they try to navigate a series of bizarre interactions with the people of Ephesus and untangle a mystery from the past.
A joint production with The Chiltern Shakespeare Company.
October 2024
at Wycombe Abbey School
24th, 25th & 26th October
Evening performances at 7:30pm
Saturday matinee at 2:00pm
Set in 1896 at Girton College, Cambridge, the play revolves around four talented female undergraduates who are determined to receive formal degree qualifications like their male counterparts.
The Girton girls study ferociously, matching their male peers grade for grade, while fighting for their education and self-determination against strong opposition .
The play's title comes from the Blue Stocking Society founded in the 1750’s, and whose members represented a new kind of modern, intellectual woman. However, by the late 19th century when the play is set, the term “blue stockings” was often used derogatorily about educated women.
We are performing the play at Wycombe Abbey School which is a very fitting venue. The founder of the school, and its first headmistress, was one of the original 9 Girton girls.
